NewsUL Offers Guidance on
Reconditioned Electrical
EquipmentUnderwriters Laboratories (UL) is
offering government agencies, sub-agencies, and
other Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ)
guidance when it comes to reconditioning
water-damaged electrical equipment. This page on the UL website
offers a comprehensive list of commercial and
industrial equipment that are good candidates for
reconditioning, as well as UL contacts for making
additional queries. PEARL will be following up
with them shortly -- stay tuned... Read more
NEMA Says Seek Qualified
Reconditioner for Water Damaged Electrical
EquipmentFollowing the busy 2005 hurricane
season, NEMA issued, "Guidelines for Handling Water-damaged Electrical
Equipment." Among the many devices that are
candidates for reconditioning are both
high-voltage and low-voltage circuit
breakers.... Read MoreABB's Reconditioning of
46-year-old Transformer Called a
'Miracle'We're not sure if it was really a
miracle or not, since PEARL members do this sort
of work every day. But then, saving customers lots
of money and avoiding downtime is pretty
special... Read moreBuy Capital Equipment Now;
Inflation to Double Next YearIf you've
been thinking about buying that new breaker tester
and moving from an associate PEARL member to a
full-voting member, this year may be the right
time to do it. One of PEARL's favorite
publications,
Electrical Wholesaling, shares some good
advice from economist Alan Beaulieu in this Jim
Lucy editorial: Buy that new equipment now,
because inflation is likely to go from 3.5% in
2010 to 6.5% next year. PEARL's newsletter staff
has followed Alan's economic forecasts since 2007,
and he's been right on the money, calling the
recession and the slow economic recovery... Read

By the fall of 2007,
Red River Biodiesel, Ltd. was ready to take
advantage of the rush to renewable fuels. The
biodiesel plant had installed animal fat
liquefaction vats and associated equipment to turn
poultry fat, soy and other natural oils from the
surrounding New Boston, Texas farmlands into
high-grade biodiesel fuel -- except for one
problem: they didn't have any electrical juice to
make the go juice. Red River had been waiting for
months on 26, F2100 Cutler-Hammer motor control
centers (MCCs) until management became concerned
that further delays on top of long
lead times at the original equipment manufacturer
(OEM) could delay the plant's opening. Red River
engineer Oliver Rodz decided to look for a
secondary electrical supplier. He called several
electrical distributors and suppliers, including
Southland Electrical Supply's (Burlington, NC)
General Manager, Don West...Read more

How To: Inspect, Recondition, and
Test Low-Voltage Magnetic Starters Magnetic
motor starters are a slight misnomer because these
devices are responsible for not only starting, but
running, and sometimes staging an electric motor.
The motor starter also possesses some integral
overload protection. The magnetic motor starter is
the heart of the control schemes for the magnetic
(as opposed to electronic) control of electric
motors, whether that control be found in wall
mounted enclosure, part of a combination motor
starter/circuit protector; part of some sort of
reduced voltage starter; or part of a motor
control center...Read more
